The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the MediaWiki Content Platform team. In this fully remote role, you will contribute to the infrastructure that powers Wikipedia, focusing on the evolution of wikitext to ensure it remains efficient, scalable, and accessible for millions of users worldwide.
Key responsibilities
- Design and deliver improvements to wikitext processing infrastructure, balancing performance and maintainability.
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and community members to iterate on new features.
- Write high-quality PHP and JavaScript code supporting hundreds of languages.
- Create and maintain internet APIs and instrument components to monitor quality.
- Leverage caching and persistence technologies to support global content delivery.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Experience with parser generators, interpreters, compilers, or language runtimes.
- Proven ability to own complex technical projects from definition to delivery.
- Strong engineering practices, including unit testing, security awareness, and code reviews.
- Ability to work effectively across organizational boundaries and mentor other engineers.
