Appliscale is looking for a Senior Java Engineer to join the Organized Play team for one of the world's leading game studios. You will be responsible for building and maintaining the backend systems that power competitive gaming, including tournament registration, operator tooling, and services that drive player-facing experiences.
Key responsibilities
- Implement complex tournament lifecycle logic, including Swiss rounds, playoffs, standings, and tiebreakers.
- Design and evolve clean, maintainable backend components using Java and Spring Boot.
- Develop robust REST and GraphQL APIs to support tournament workflows.
- Work with relational databases to model and query tournament data effectively.
- Debug complex production issues and participate in peer code reviews to ensure high-quality standards.
Requirements
- 6+ years of backend development experience with a proven track record of owning production systems.
- Strong proficiency in modern Java (17+) and Spring Boot.
- Demonstrated ability to design clean, maintainable backend architectures.
- Solid understanding of relational database fundamentals and experience with JPA, Hibernate, or SQL-first modeling.
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment with a requirement for afternoon/evening overlap with the US West Coast team.
