Appliscale is looking for a Senior Java Engineer to join the Organized Play team for a major game studio. You will be responsible for building and extending backend systems that power competitive gaming, including tournament registration, operator tooling, and services that drive player experiences.
Key responsibilities
- Implement complex tournament lifecycle logic such as Swiss rounds, playoffs, and tiebreakers.
- Build and maintain workflows for registration, rule enforcement, and audit logging.
- Design and evolve clean, scalable backend components using modern Java.
- Develop robust REST and GraphQL APIs to support tournament workflows.
- Collaborate with the team to debug production issues and ensure high system correctness.
Requirements
- 6+ years of professional backend development experience with ownership of production systems.
- Strong proficiency in modern Java (17+) and Spring Boot.
- Proven ability to design clean, maintainable backend architectures.
- Experience building systems with complex workflows or state transitions.
- Solid understanding of relational databases, JPA, Hibernate, or SQL-first modeling.
- Ability to work effectively in a fully remote environment with a team based on the US West Coast.
