Senior Backend Software Engineer

payabl. is seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our Gateway Related Projects team. You will play a pivotal role in designing and implementing robust payment solutions, ensuring high performance, scalability, and 99.9% reliability for our core transaction systems in a fully remote environment.

Key responsibilities

• Support and extend existing Perl-based payment gateway systems while developing high-performance microservices in Python.
• Architect and implement scalable, distributed services to replace legacy components and ensure reliability under high-load conditions.
• Manage complex third-party API integrations, focusing on seamless transaction flows and robust error handling.
• Lead code reviews, drive engineering best practices, and identify system bottlenecks to improve overall performance.
• Collaborate with DevOps to enhance CI/CD pipelines and architect solutions using AWS services.

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with deep expertise in Python, specifically FastAPI and AsyncIO.
• Genuine eagerness to work with Perl production code to bridge the gap between legacy and modern systems.
• Proven experience building and scaling microservices architectures and high-throughput distributed systems.
• Strong understanding of Docker, containerization, and AWS cloud infrastructure.
• Excellent English communication skills to collaborate effectively within a multi-functional, remote-first team.
