Senior Backend Python Engineer (Core Gateway) - Relocation to Cyprus

payabl. is looking for a Senior Backend Python Engineer to join our Core Gateway team. This role offers a unique opportunity to maintain our existing Perl-based payment infrastructure while leading the development of our next-generation Python microservices platform in a high-performance financial environment.

Key responsibilities

• Support and extend the existing Perl-based payment gateway while managing the migration to modern Python services.
• Design, develop, and maintain scalable server-side components using Python, specifically AsyncIO and FastAPI.
• Integrate third-party APIs and external payment services into both legacy and modern platform layers.
• Collaborate with DevOps teams on CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and cloud deployments.
• Participate in code reviews and uphold high engineering standards to ensure system reliability.

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with strong Python mastery.
• Experience with Perl or a genuine willingness to work within legacy production code.
• Solid understanding of API integrations, webhooks, callbacks, and retry policies.
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures, Docker, and AWS cloud services.
• Strong English communication skills for effective collaboration in an agile environment.
• A product-focused mindset with a commitment to writing clean, intentional, and well-reasoned code.
