Senior Backend Engineer (Ruby), Plan: Spec-Driven Development

GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, enabling organizations to accelerate digital transformation and ship secure software faster. As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Plan: Spec-Driven Development team, you will help build agentic workflows that transform stated intent into refined work items, implementation plans, and mergeable code.

Key responsibilities

• Lead backend features from early product discussions through technical design, implementation, and post-launch learning.
• Build the flows, APIs, and data models behind agent-generated work items and implementation plans.
• Develop evaluation and benchmarking systems to measure workflow quality and success rates.
• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams to shape scope and make practical trade-offs.
• Mentor other engineers and contribute to technical direction across the Plan group.

Requirements

• Strong Ruby on Rails experience in a large production codebase and production experience with Python.
• Experience driving substantial projects with multiple engineers over several months.
• A product mindset with experience owning features end-to-end and engaging with users.
• Strong API design and SQL fundamentals.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in an asynchronous, all-remote environment.
