Senior Backend Engineer (Go), Tenant Scale: Gitaly

GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, enabling organizations to increase developer productivity and accelerate digital transformation. As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Gitaly team, you will help build and maintain the Git data storage tier, ensuring reliable, secure, and fast access to repositories for millions of users.

Key responsibilities

• Own complex technical initiatives from problem definition through implementation, rollout, and operational monitoring.
• Lead technical design for distributed storage, performance, and scalability challenges using data-driven decision-making.
• Partner with cross-functional teams including Infrastructure and Site Reliability Engineering to deliver high-impact outcomes.
• Improve engineering practices through mentoring, design reviews, and constructive code contributions.
• Take operational ownership of systems, including incident response, capacity analysis, and customer escalations.

Requirements

• Significant professional experience building and optimizing distributed or highly available software systems in large-scale production environments.
• Strong systems design skills with the ability to reason about performance, concurrency, and failure modes.
• Professional experience with Go or another backend/systems language.
• Proven track record of owning complex projects end-to-end and influencing technical decisions across teams.
• Experience operating production systems and turning operational learnings into durable improvements.
