Turnitin is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join our shared services team, focusing on building scalable distributed systems and high-performing software for our global educational platform. You will play a pivotal role in developing foundational systems that support our mission to ensure integrity and improve learning outcomes worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimize scalable shared backend services using Java and serverless technologies like AWS Lambda.
• Implement RESTful APIs and event-driven systems while contributing to frontend components as needed.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including architects and product managers, to deliver innovative solutions.
• Provide mentorship and guidance to junior developers to foster team growth and share best practices.
• Ensure high-quality code through peer reviews, automated testing, and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines.

Requirements

• 8+ years of backend development expertise with proficiency in Java and serverless frameworks.
• Hands-on experience with frontend technologies such as React or Web Components.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, data modeling, and cloud-native development on AWS.
• Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional, distributed teams across different time zones.
• Extensive experience with software development best practices, including design patterns and test-driven development.
