GIS Specialist

Sun King is seeking a high-impact GIS Specialist to strengthen how geospatial insights inform our work across Africa. This role will shape our technology stack, source high-quality data, and develop a reliable platform that enables the effective use of geospatial insights to improve sales planning, operational effectiveness, and policy engagement.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain our internal geospatial data environment, consolidating electrification plans, socioeconomic datasets, and demographic layers.
• Develop and maintain geospatial databases with a focus on data quality, consistency, and ease of access.
• Streamline GIS workflows and develop custom scripts to improve processing speed and efficiency.
• Work closely with Data and BI teams to incorporate GIS outputs into company dashboards and planning tools.
• Partner with software development teams to integrate GIS data and market potential models into mobile applications used by field teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geography, GIS, Remote Sensing, Data Science, or a related field.
• Experience applying GIS within the energy sector, including electrification planning or off-grid market assessments.
• Proficiency with GIS platforms such as ArcGIS or QGIS for modelling and data management.
• Experience automating workflows using Python, specifically GeoPandas and related libraries.
• Familiarity with African electrification and development datasets, including census data and national energy plans.
