Founding ML Engineer (Spectrum)

Spectrum, a project within the JetBrains startup incubator, is seeking a Founding ML Engineer to revolutionize how software-building organizations manage knowledge. By creating a unified ontology from code, documentation, and issues, Spectrum aims to provide a living source of truth for product and architectural knowledge, empowering AI agents to reason effectively across complex systems.

Key responsibilities

• Designing and building ML/LLM solutions for data ingestion, knowledge extraction, retrieval, and reasoning.
• Architecting agents for context retrieval and data alignment, including prompt engineering and inference optimization.
• Establishing MLOps practices, including orchestration, observability, and experiment tracking.
• Collaborating with the engineering team on system design and defining the research agenda.
• Defining hiring criteria and growing the ML team culture.

Requirements

• Proven track record as an ML/AI Lead with at least five years of experience in ML/AI systems.
• At least two years of focused experience with LLMs and generative AI.
• Deep understanding of the LLM ecosystem, model architectures, and fine-tuning approaches.
• Hands-on experience with agentic frameworks, vector databases, and RAG patterns.
• Strong Python programming skills and excellent communication abilities.
