Director, Engineering

Sphera is a leading global provider of enterprise software and services dedicated to managing and optimizing environmental, health, safety, and sustainability. We are seeking a Director of Engineering to build a durable, high-performing engineering organization capable of thriving in the AI era while maintaining operational excellence and delivery momentum.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the iterative adoption of AI-assisted development practices, ensuring the team maintains high standards for context, quality, and human judgment.
• Build, grow, and retain a strong engineering team, ensuring redundancy in knowledge and vendor relationships.
• Manage complex, cross-team programs, resolving dependencies and maintaining a critical path to meet launch and delivery deadlines.
• Establish clear reliability standards, including on-call processes and incident management, to ensure operational excellence.
• Maintain accountability for cloud and vendor costs, partnering with Finance to manage budgets and forecasting effectively.
• Lead the team through organizational changes, such as reorganizations or acquisitions, while ensuring steady delivery and clear documentation.

Requirements

• 10+ years in software development, including 2+ years managing engineering managers and teams of 30+ in a fast-paced SaaS environment.
• Hands-on experience running evidence-based trials of AI-assisted development and building team discipline around AI integration.
• Proven track record of managing complex, interdependent workstreams against strict delivery deadlines.
• Experience with site reliability practices and a working knowledge of FinOps principles.
• Strong grounding in agile delivery, software architecture, and core engineering fundamentals.
