Our Client is a leading European technology company delivering software solutions for the financial services industry. Their platforms support banks, wealth and asset managers, and financial institutions across Europe, powering business-critical processes in securities processing, investment management, and digital banking.
Role Overview
For our Client we are looking for a qualified partner for COBOL Engineer (Linux/Unix) (m/f/d) position with German skills to join an international engineering team delivering mission-critical solutions for the banking sector.
You'll work on large-scale platforms supporting securities processing and tax operations for leading European financial institutions. This is an opportunity to work on long-term enterprise projects where your expertise will directly contribute to the evolution of core banking systems. The role offers challenging technical work, close collaboration with experienced engineers, and a stable international environment.
This is more than maintaining legacy systems. You'll help modernize and evolve critical banking platforms used by leading financial institutions across Europe. An onboarding session (1–2 weeks) in the Munich area is required at the beginning of the project.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain enterprise-grade COBOL applications running on Linux/Unix platforms.
Develop new functionalities and enhance business-critical applications.
Work with Embedded SQL and SQL to implement and optimize database interactions.
Develop and maintain Shell scripts (Bash/KornShell) to automate operational processes.
Use Linux/Unix command-line tools (e.g. grep, awk, sed, SSH) for application support, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
Analyze production issues, perform root cause analysis, and resolve technical incidents.
Integrate applications using REST/SOAP services and messaging technologies where applicable.
Collaborate closely with business analysts, architects, and international engineering teams.
Ensure application performance, stability, and reliability.
Contribute to the continuous improvement and modernization of enterprise applications.
Required Skills & Experience
4+ years of professional experience as a COBOL Engineer or COBOL Developer.
Strong knowledge of COBOL, Embedded SQL, SQL, and Shell Scripting (Bash/KornShell).
Practical experience working with Linux/Unix environments (RHEL, AIX, Solaris).
Hands-on experience with Unix command-line tools such as grep, awk, sed, and SSH.
Experience working with REST and/or SOAP services.
Strong analytical thinking and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to work independently within complex enterprise environments.
German language skills at B2 level or higher
Nice to have:
Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly appreciated:
Experience with GNU COBOL.
Experience with RabbitMQ.
Experience with PostgreSQL.
German Capital Gains Tax (Kapitalertragsteuer), Withholding Tax, or Securities Tax Processing.
Corporate Actions (Mandatory & Voluntary Events).
Securities Processing, Settlement, and Custody Operations.
SWIFT ISO 15022 / ISO 20022 messaging (MT56x / MX).
Clearstream Banking and/or Euroclear.
Equities, Bonds, Investment Funds, and Derivatives.
Regulatory frameworks such as MiFID II, CSDR, FATCA, or CRS.
