The Opportunity: Miris is seeking an exceptional and outcome-focused Applied Researcher to join our friendly and fully remote R&D team. You will navigate the fast moving Gaussian splatting / radiance field research to find and adapt existing techniques and identify where to push beyond the bleeding edge to deliver exceptional immersive streaming experiences to low-powered mobile devices. This is an applied role, you will take ideas from the theoretical stage, through prototyping, and all the way to successful production roll out. You will work in a highly collaborative environment, closely partnering with our rendering engineers and cloud/content processing teams to build a seamless end-to-end system that transforms varied user inputs (photogrammetry, 3D models) into exceptional spatial experiences. What You'll Do: Conduct applied research into novel methods for representing, compressing, and streaming animated 3D content, with a strong focus on Gaussian splatting and efficiency for low-power mobile AR/VR devices Quickly develop proof-of-concepts and transition successful experiments to production-ready code to advance our streaming pipeline Design and evaluate algorithms for spatial data optimization, compression, and adaptive streaming based on network conditions and device capabilities Contribute to solutions for challenging problems like animated content, real-time relighting, integrating content into an AR environment, and facilitating open-world VR experiences Work closely with rendering engineers to define data formats, rendering pipelines, and performance targets optimized for mobile hardware. Collaborate with cloud and content processing engineers to establish robust and efficient workflows for automated processing of diverse user input data into our streaming format Proactively follow and apply the latest computer graphics research related to novel view synthesis on mobile devices, such as radiance fields, differentiable rendering, and photogrammetry Clearly communicate research findings and technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders What You'll Bring: MS or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience Proven track record leading research which advances the state-of-the-art in areas such as radiance fields, photogrammetry, machine learning for graphics, or real-time rendering Strong understanding of modern 3D rendering pipelines and concepts Experience with radiance fields (e.g., Gaussian splatting, NeRF) and related novel spatial representation techniques is highly desirable. Excellent programming skills in Python and C++ Experience with performance optimization and writing efficient code for resource-constrained environments Ability to quickly understand and implement complex research papers Demonstrated ability to be outcome-focused and deliver working code that solves real-world problems Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous startup environment Excellent communication and collaboration skills Bonus Points: Experience with mobile development (iOS, Android) and mobile graphics APIs (Metal, Vulkan) Familiarity with game engines (Unity, Unreal Engine) and their rendering pipelines Experience with cloud computing platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) for processing pipelines Contributions to open-source projects in graphics or computer vision Publications in top-tier conferences or journals in related fields (e.g., SIGGRAPH, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, NeurIPS, ICML)
